Your service manual should have information specific to your motorcycle. To check the amount of freeplay in your cable, roll the throttle forward as far as it goes and then open it carefully until you feel tension. Depending on what is considered the right amount of freeplay for your motorcycle, you may find that you need to adjust your cables to tighten them a little more.
However, replacing them both will give you fresh, matching cables that are clean and reliable. Many riders report going years without ever changing the cables. However, you can also find plenty of stories of cables snapping after five or six years. Of course, there are some ways that you can increase the lifespan of your cables and make sure they are always in their best condition. The first is to check what kind of cable you have. Some require occasional lubrication about once a year , while others are secured in a teflon tube that does not need additional lube.
Aside from that, the best way to take care of your throttle cables is to clean them after especially dirty or wet rides and inspect them often. Most fraying will happen at the end of the cable, so check the ends of your throttle cables as often as you think of it.
You also want to make sure that the throttle tube rotates smoothly. A gritty, tough, or sticky throttle tube could just be dirty. You can remove the throttle tube and carefully clean it in order to remove grime. Often, this is enough to return it to smooth running.
Even with the proper maintenance, your throttle cables will eventually need to be replaced. Remember, when you decide to replace your throttle cables, you should replace both the push and pull cables at the same time. Also remember that they are different. Now, replacing the throttle cables can feel like a tricky process because you need to get the routing exactly the same. Route the. Clean the area of the handlebar where the throttle is to be mounted.
Refer to STEP 5a. With this type of throttle, mount the. Then install the push cable onto the lower throttle housing. Next, slide. Install the upper throttle housing while. This will prevent the grip from binding on the end of the handlebar. Insert the throttle housing. Kit is supplied with a throttle Yamaha-Type. I ordered both the push and pull throttle cables from a local store and I realized now that they gave me two push cables instead.
I know the actual cables are different in the length of the metal tubing at the top but they do look the same otherwise. So I was wondering if I could use the push cable in place of the push cable?
Sorry for the newbie question. Def, I was 30 miles out an had my pull break one time- swapped the push over lucky i had a screwdriver.
The curved ends for push and pull may slightly differ in order to prevent interference with each other while being screwed into the throttle housing. Where push is fitted first, then pull has sufficient clearance to be fitted.
And vice-versa. The principles to adjustment, however, is basically the same, namely, to slide the cover off the in-line adjuster and release the lock nut. Then turn the adjuster to get the mm free play. Once that is achieved, tighten the lock nut and spray some silicon on the adjustor before sliding the cover back.
Operating at the other end requires the same principles, although access is less easy. When adjusting at the engine end of the cables ensure that the adjustor at the other end is set to the middle so there is scope for fine adjustment either way. The last, but important stage, is the safety check. If this happens, more adjustment will be required. When installing a new cable, it is important that the routing of the original cable is checked and noted.
Also, ensure that the dimensions of the cables are identical, allowing for the fact that old cables do stretch over time. Prior to installation the cable should be lubricated with some light oil to lubricate the inner cable. By holding the cable upright and moving the inner cable up and down, the oil will be eased down the cable. In routing the cable, ensure that there is a gap between the cable and any heat source and keep ties loose to allow the cables to move.
Where nipples require lubrication in levers or linkages, use a small amount of copper grease rather than heavy greases which attract dirt and restrict the movement of the nipple, causing excessive wear and stress on the nipple and cable.
Once the cable has been installed, check the steering lock to lock and check the operation of the cable at both extremes of steering in the same way as when adjusting the free play.
