Why does eastenders look different

Daytime TV shows generally don't pull in as much advertising revenue as evening programs, and many soap operas air daily instead of weekly, so low budgets, short production times and quick turnaround are the name of the game. Backlighting, part of the three-point lighting setup often used in television production, helps "lift" actors out of the background.

This is especially useful for productions that are shot on a lower-quality medium and in small interior sets, which soaps often are. The problem is that shooting on videotape on a small set can reduce the subtlety of the lighting technique. Actors in the foreground often wind up very noticeably backlit, something that doesn't happen on shows with larger sets, or shows that are recorded on film.

Soaps and other lower-budget shows also look "off" because they're often evenly lit across the entire set to facilitate simultaneously shooting with more than one camera. As time has gone on, Coronation Street has shifted to providing viewers with lighter doses of coronavirus, displaying the pandemic visually, rather than in actual storylines. The show progressed to giving the pandemic less airtime because, MacLeod says, people spent all day talking and living through the pandemic, but what they came to Coronation Street for was a bit of escapism, though he knew that having it play a part in the show was still important.

The real-life partners of some of the EastEnders cast have been drafted in, to allow "moments of intimacy to be cheated" when the soap resumes. The new recruits will act as body-doubles so that "crucial moments where two characters are kissing" can be filmed following government guidelines.

The BBC said the move was just one of several measures being taken to keep the cast and crew safe on set. New episodes will resume on 7 September, after a three-month break. The hiatus was made necessary when the Covid lockdown brought production to a halt.

Since then fans have been taken on a trip down memory lane, with re-screenings of classic episodes from the soap's year history. Filming resumed at the end of June and the show's executive producer Jon Sen said the production team "had to choose our moments carefully" when it came to filming intimate scenes "because it takes much more time to film like this".

We have had to adjust the Vic seating ever so slightly to get actors through and back, so we felt that was practical from a filming point of view and that it reflects real life really.
