Defending the farms was rather useless imo. I didn't notice anything drastically different and it seems most people at the Bioware forum say defending trade is the best route. User Info: francofone It is pretty ridiculous because you have to defend them at the end anyway.
If you sent guards to protect the city then why is still being terrorized in the end? Does this change if you choose to just focus on the city and not the farms? This no my pee! On the topic of only defending trade I recall someone on Gamefaqs saying that only defending trade caused the epilogue to state that the region gets overrun with bandits.
